How did you first hear about AccesSurf?
We first heard about AccessSurf through my daughter’s developmental pediatrician at Kaiser. We started attending shortly after, around September or October 2024
What does AccesSurf mean to you?
AccessSurf is built on an incredible community of organizers and volunteers who truly care and make a real difference. It offers a unique opportunity for people with special needs to experience something they might never have thought possible—like being in the ocean, catching waves, and having fun safely. For us, it’s been more than just an activity—it’s been life-changing. We’ve formed close friendships, and I’m constantly amazed by how deeply this community can impact people’s lives, including ours.
What is your favorite AccesSurf memory?
As a parent of Alexandra Dobrescu, my favorite memory with Access Surf is seeing the transformation in my daughter. At first, Alexandra (Sasha) was terrified of the waves and even being near the ocean. She didn’t want to go near the surfboard, and we weren’t sure she’d be willing to try. But thanks to the kind, patient, and playful approach from the volunteers, everything changed. On our second Access Surf session, with the incredible support of Mari (our surfer), Sasha bravely got on the board and caught some waves. She was laughing, cheering, and shouting for more—it was pure joy. Watching her from the shore, I couldn’t help but wipe away tears of happiness. It was a moment I’ll never forget.
Is there anything else you would like to sat or share with our AccesSurf ‘Ohana?
We also participate in AccessSwim and Flat Water Days, and every time we go, my daughter—who has both physical and developmental challenges—is so excited. That alone is an incredible success for us as a family, because it’s rare for her to enjoy activities like this. I just want to give a heartfelt shout-out and thank you to the entire AccessSurf ‘Ohana for creating such a safe, joyful, and empowering space. We’re truly grateful for this amazing opportunity.
