We were incredibly disappointed in having to cancel The Hawai’i Adaptive Surfing Championships this year, but in response to these current challenges, we created a virtual contest for our adaptive community!

We are so stoked to announce:

Two Categories (One surfing photo per category):

  1. No ka hoʻokūkū: This is our competitive category in which the contestant will provide a photo that best showcases their critical surfing abilities(technical performance).
    1. Judges will be looking for and scoring based on the following criteria:
      1. Commitment of Maneuver
      2. Level of Innovation or Progression
      3. Degree of Difficulty
      4. Speed
      5. Power
      6. Flow
  2. No ka leʻaleʻa: This is our “Stoke” category! We want you to show the pure joy of surfing; be creative!  Like they say, the best surfer is the one having the most fun!
    1. Judges will be looking for and scoring based on the following criteria:
      1. Joy
      2. Stoke
      3. Love
      4. Happiness
      5. Creativity
      6. Enjoyment


  • Athlete must register online before August 20th to be eligible to win (click button below to register)
  • Athlete must be riding a wave in either photo
  • Maximum of two surfing photo submissions (One per category)
  • Photo files should be in a high resolution and popular format (jpeg, png, bmp, etc.)
  • Animated pictures (i.e. animated gifs) are not allowed
  • Photos should be named appropriately: (Technical Performance: YourName_1) and (Stoke: YourName_2)
  • Photos must be emailed to contest@accessurf.org
  • Photo must have been shot during the years of 2019 or 2020
  • Deadline to register and submit photo(s) is August 20th, 2020
  • Athlete must be an adaptive athlete with a medically diagnosed disability
  • Each athlete must email us a photo of themselves wearing the contest T-shirt
  • Athletes are encouraged to share their photos on social media with the hashtag #ASHonlinecontest

Each category prize winner will receive:

  • Free registration for Hawaii Adaptive Surfing Championships 2021
  • 5 night hotel stay in Waikiki during the month of June 2021
  • Waikiki restaurant vouchers during the month of June 2021


  • $20 USD will cover the cost of the T-shirt and shipping it to each athlete
